النّافِلَةُ / Supererogatory prayers
1ـ رسولُ اللهِِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إنّ لِلقُلوبِ إقبالاً وإدبارا، فإذا أقبَلَت فتَنَفَّلوا، وإذا أدبَرَت فعلَيكُم بالفَريضَةِ.
1– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Hearts have
[the capacity to] incline
[to worship] and to retract, so when they incline then perform the supererogatory, and when they retract then observe the obligatory.’

2ـ عن الفُضَيل: سألتُ أبا جعفرٍ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) عن قَولِ اللّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ: «الّذينَ هُمْ على صَلَواتِهِمْ يُحافِظونَ» قالَ: هِي الفَريضَةُ . قلتُ: «الّذينَ هُمْ على صَلاتِهِمْ دائِمونَ» قالَ: هِيَ النّافِلَةُ.
2– Al-Fuzayl said, ‘I asked Abu Ja`afar
[al-Baqir] (AS) about Allah’s verse in the Qur’an: "and those who are watchful of their prayers."1330. He said, ‘These are the obligatory prayers.’ I asked, "those who are persevering in their prayers."1331? He said, ‘They are the supererogatory prayers.’

3ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا رُخصَةَ في فَرضٍ، ولا شِدَّةَ في نافِلَةٍ.
3– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘There is no leniency with respect to the obligatory, and there is no hardship
[imposed] with respect to the supererogatory.’

4ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إذا أضَرَّتِ النَّوافِلُبالفَرائضِ فارْفُضوها.
4– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘When the supererogatory prayers harm the obligatory ones then leave them.’

5ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا قُربَةَ بالنَّوافِلِ إذا أضَرَّت بالفَرائضِ.
5– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘There is no proximity
[to Allah] achieved with the supererogatory if they affect the obligatory
[prayers] adversely.’
